What makes a mylar bag child resistant?

A CR bag uses a zipper that takes two hands and a specific motion to open, usually pinching a marked spot while pulling the bag apart. Young children struggle with that combination. Adults, including seniors, can open and close it without much trouble once they’ve done it once.

Zippers earn the child resistant label through panel testing. Under the US protocol, 16 CFR 1700.20, groups of children aged 42 to 51 months try to open the package, and adults aged 50 to 70 have to be able to open and close it properly. ISO 8317 is the international standard for reclosable child resistant packaging.

Ask us for the test certificate for the zipper on your bag. It belongs in your compliance file.

How to open a CR mylar bag

  1. Tear across the top at the notch to break the tamper seal.
  2. Pinch the marked area of the zipper with one hand.
  3. Pull the front and back apart with the other hand.

Most CR bags print a short instruction near the zipper, so customers figure it out right away.

Three things every CR bag needs

A child resistant zipper

Certified through child panel testing, and easy for adults to reseal so the product stays fresh between uses.

Tamper evidence

The heat sealed strip above the zipper, opened at a tear notch, shows customers the bag hasn’t been opened before. Canada’s cannabis rules require this kind of feature.

Smell and light protection

Foil or metallized layers block light and slow down odour and oxygen. A properly sealed bag keeps the smell inside until it’s opened.

CR bags and Canada’s plain packaging rules

If you’re a licensed cannabis producer, your packaging has to follow Health Canada’s Cannabis Regulations. Here’s the short version of what that means for the bag itself:

  • The immediate container has to be child resistant and tamper evident.
  • Container surfaces should be one uniform colour, with no metallic or fluorescent finish.
  • No embossing, foil, cut outs or clear windows.
  • Leave room for the standardized cannabis symbol, the health warning message and the other required label details.

We’ll set up your bag colour, finish and print layout to match, and we can supply plain CR bags if you print labels in house.

This is a plain language summary, not legal advice. The Cannabis Regulations have details and exceptions, so check the current rules and your compliance team before you print.

Popular CR bag sizes

Starting points for cannabis flower. Edibles, prerolls and extracts are sized to the pack, so send us the dimensions.

Fluffy flower needs more room than dense flower. Test your fill with a sample bag before you print.

Not just for cannabis

Child resistant packaging makes sense anywhere a curious kid could get hurt. We make CR mylar bags for nicotine products, some vitamins and supplements, cleaning pods and other household products.

Selling into the United States as well? CR mylar bags are common there for hemp, CBD and edibles, and the same zippers and testing standards apply.

Plain CR bags with labels

Lots of strains or small batches? Plain CR bags in solid colours like matte black or white, paired with printed labels, keep things flexible. Order printed bags once a product proves itself.

Common questions

Don’t see yours? Ask it in the quote form and a real person will answer.

Are CR mylar bags required for cannabis in Canada?

Yes. Health Canada requires the immediate container for cannabis products to be child resistant and tamper evident. A CR mylar bag with a certified zipper and a tear notch seal covers both.

How do you open a child resistant mylar bag?

Tear the top at the notch, then pinch the marked part of the zipper with one hand and pull the bag open with the other. Once you know the motion it takes a second.

Are CR mylar bags smell proof?

A sealed foil or metallized bag keeps smell in very well. Once the tamper seal is torn the zipper still helps, but no reclosable zipper is completely airtight. Keep the bag closed and store it at room temperature for the best results.

Can you print on CR mylar bags?

Yes. We print CR bags like any custom bag, either in plain packaging friendly single colours for licensed producers or in full colour for products that allow it.

Can I order plain CR bags and add my own labels?

Yes. Plain CR bags in black, white and other solid colours work well with printed labels, especially when you have lots of strains or small batches.
